Usenet
Yes, I've spent a fair amount of time, lo these many years, in that vast and bizarre electronic community known as Usenet. From time to time, I've contributed to (and will again!) groups including:
- sci.military: Discussions about things military, past, present and future. This group split a few years after I first got involved, into a moderated group sci.military.moderated for general discussion and an unmoderated group sci.military.naval specifically for naval discussions.
- comp.software.year-2000: Discussions about things related to the Year 2000 software bug. I originally joined this group when I was working on Y2K fixes and looking to see what sort of other information was out there. Well, "out there" was a pretty good description of much of the traffic on this unmoderated group. Believe it or not, there's still traffic...
- comp.software.extreme-programming: Discussions about things related to Extreme Programming (and, by extension, other agile software processes). Appears to have high troll levels, and rabid crosspostings to other high-flamage newsgroups.
- alt.callahans: Discussions about things - well, all things, really. Loosely modeled after Callahan's Place, the setting of many of Spider Robinson's best work. Famous (or infamous) for tremendous thread drift and truly rotten puns. Be warned.
Note that links in this section are to the Google Usenet Archive.
Memberships
I'm a member of a number of different organizations, including the American Automobile Association, the Appalachian Mountain Club, the Nashoba Valley Photo Club, public television station WGBH, and the United States Naval Institute.
Of course, this list doesn't include the various professional organizations that I'm involved with.
Family
I know of a few pages of folks related to me:
- My father, Fred C. Schweppe, was a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology until his death in 1988. (By the way, the picture that MIT has of Dad does not do him justice!)
- My paternal grandfather, Edmund L. Schweppe was a Deputy U.S. Marshal who was killed in the line of duty in 1952. And, yes, I was named after him.
- My younger brother Carl runs Schweppe Software Consultants, a software process consultancy. I'm not associated with SSC, but we have worked together over the years, most recently at Sapient Corporation from 1995 through 1998.
Other
I'll add other stuff as I think of it.
